One million Ghana cedis has been paid as interest on mobile money to customers by Tigo Ghana. About 650,000 Tigo customers...
benefited from this amount as interests for the first and second quarters. This constitutes about 80% of the total interests for the period.
“This
initiative should encourage more people to save in their wallets ” Tara
Squire, Director of Mobile at Tigo said. He also said “For interest
payment, it’s just like a natural progression. Customers transact
through mobile financial services and to encourage customers not just to
use it as a place where you put money in and take money out, but
actually a wallet you keep money in to drive other transaction. We think
this is a step in the right direction”
This
initiative is as a result of a directive by the Bank of Ghana (BOG) to
all telecommunications to pay interests to customers of mobile money
banking.
